I've had two hand-me-down sewing machines that were very basic. When the last one died I decided to treat myself. I probably won't do much with the embroidery other than some odds and ends here and there. I typically just do mending and hemming.
Out of the box, I was pleased. Evidently the bobbins are "different" than other bobbins as far as size but I already had a package of the exact same size.
The only trouble I've had was using 22 cent WM thread - the tension SOMETIMES wasn't right. But then, using Coates and Clark at $4 a spool also sometimes the tension was temperamental.
The instructions are comprehensive, the tutorials broadbrush. In the month I've had this I've sewn two dresses and one quilt, and hemmed a couple pairs of pants. Here are my comments on each:
The dresses were a satin (here I had some trouble with tension on the thin, slippery lining no matter the thread or tension setting) and a georgette (here I just totally botched the dress on my own but it was tricky to sew this very thin, gauzy fabric).
The quilt was a handmade one I'd just finished but I wanted to embroider a poem around the outer border. Some of the letters are a little weird - hard to line it up right but I think it turned out well for the most part. At some points, the machine would stop at the end of each letter, but most of the time it completed the whole word I'd programmed in. The size of the text was very accommodating - you can choose S, M, or L for the text size. My letters were anywhere from 1/2 inch to 2 inches tall.
The hemming of the pants was flawless.
Once you get the "bobbin thread low" message, I can't figure out how to replace the bobbin (much less fill a new bobbin without losing your place in the embroidery), making a seamless transition from the end of the old thread and the beginning of the new one.
I very much like that I don't need to worry about the thread pulling out of the needle as the needle descends if the "tail" isn't long enough, like my older sewing machines. I've never had that happen.
I already own a brother machine, that one has performed flawlessly so far, but I wanted to upgrade to an embroidery machine. Other similar machines cost twice as much, and frankly, for an amateur seamstress that seemed to much.
I have to say that this machine has surpassed my expectations. It is very easy to use (assuming you have been around a sewing machine before), and even has some accessories I ordered with the machine thinking I would need them (double needle, thread ripper, etc.). No regrets, and I don't think I'll need to upgrade any time soon.
The Brother Sewing machine SE-350 is great for that..... SEWING. Even if all you want to do is small monogramming and little bit of embroidery, you will quickly grow out of it. Here is why. I bought this because of the price and ALL the great things it had to offer. The sewing part is great, lots of stitches, easy to thread, but if you will not be using the embroidery part, you can get as many different types of stitches without the embroidery attachment for less than half the price of the brother SE-350. The Brother SE-350 cost me $379.99 plus tax at Walmart.
Now, if you do want to do a big of embroidery of monogramming, the folks at brother tell you the machine comes with a big 4x4 inch embroidery hoop, which for me was plenty. BUT you can ONLY MONOGRAM LETTERS that are about 1 inch big with the included 4x4 hoop. Should you want bigger letters, you need to buy the large hoop and even then, the letters only get as big as 1 5/8 inch. Should you desire to adjust the sizes, well, you need a digitizer, which the cheapest I have found is the Dakota, and it costs about $100. On top of that you will need the card reader, because Brother needs to make extra money and they could not use any of the dozens of cards that already exist on the market. The card reader is just over $100. THEN, you need to buy the card so you can transfer and adjust your designs....that is another $30 dlls.
In summary, I will be taking this back to the store today and I am afraid I would never buy brother again. If the box of the brother SE-350 had told me that I could only monogram letters less or about 1 inch big, that machine wouldn't have been taken out of the box. I agree with others too, the bobbin cover is very easily misplaced.
Just got my BrotherSE350 April 3rd. I'm in love with it! It's more then I had thought it would be. Teaching my granddaughter how to sew, this machine makes it sooo easy. Buy it... You won't regret it. Amazon, you guys are great in the shipping. Got it in 3 days, that was fast.

I have been sewing for less than 9mos and I am capable of using this machine well. 9mos ago I was terrified at the thought of using a sewing machine. I was scared of everything that had anything to do with sewing. I knew no sewing terms and threading a machine seemed like an impossibly enormous task. Yet I have always longed for the ability to sew. So I took the plunge. I got my Brother SE-350 four months ago as a reward to myself for learning the basics. I say all of this to let everyone know that this is a very easy machine to master even for a complete and total beginner like myself. I almost immediately felt comfortable enough to try new techniques with the help of my Brother SE-350. I also love that it warns me when I am making a mistake and it tells me how to fix it easily. I am most impressed because I had never been close to an embroidery machine before I brought my Brother SE-350 home. I fully grasped all of the material in the manual within 2hrs and embroidered my 1st project the very night I opened the box. So, the biggest thing one needs to create with this machine is confidence in themselves. Of course there are things that give me great frustration. The directions are clear but they only offer very basic information. The manual does not explain that there are infinite embroidery possibilities if you buy accessories like PE-Design software. It doesn't even acknowledge that such things exist. Also the built in stitches and embroidery designs are neither fresh or new. They can even be considered quite unappealing and stale. I would still buy the machine knowing everything that I know now. I totally recommend this machine to anyone interested in sewing and embroidery. I don't think you can do better than this at this price. Take the plunge it's definitely worthwhile!
I bought my Brother in April 2008 and have been sewing on it daily for at least 3 hours every day since then. I've never had ANY trouble with it. It's a MUST that you also buy the PED Basic to go with your machine so that you can download designs from the internet. I've downloaded over 8,000 free designs so far, and that's just a "drop in the bucket". You're limited to 4 x 4 designs (that's the only drawback). The machine is very light weight and has accompanied me on many trips. You don't have to have special needles or special bobbins for this machine. It's VERY user friendly! The patterns that come with the machine are very high quality, as are the Alphabets. I'd like to have more fonts on the machine, but they are so easily accessible on the internet that this really isn't an issue. I will say that 40 weight rayon thread seems to work best (and use a bobbin thread when embroidering). When I finally wear this machine out, I'll probably go with another Brother machine.
I bought a refurbished machine from kens sewing center through amazon. It arrived well packed except that the bottom of the carton had not been reinforced with tape and shifted during shipping causing the auto threader device to fall apart. I did some sewing and it works great I did hook up the embroidery part and and ran through the programming portion but did not sew with it as without the threader it would be a lot of trouble to constantly have to change thread by hand!@!! I am sure it is covered by someone but if I have to send it back for repair it could be gone for weeks. All this for a lack of tape!! Well I have sent an e-mail to kens and I can only hope they will find a way to help. all else aside this is my third brother sewing machine the others are terrific values and work perfectly and I am sure this will also
After doing much research, I landed on this machine. The vendor's customer service was exceptional and the machine works like a dream.
I had a set amount of money that I could use for a sewing machine and after much research I finally settled on this one. It comes with so many features that I thought it was the perfect choice for me. It comes with 7 feet so that you don't have to waste extra money buying attachments like you do with other machines.
There are only two things that would make this machine even better: a scanner so that you can embroider your own designs or a USB port so that you can upload your own designs. I know that would drive up the price to an insane amount though.
The best part of the machine is how easy it is to thread both the machine and the bobbin. There is no need for an extra bobbin threader unless you own a boutique. You don't even have to use the foot pedal if you don't want to. Thats also optional for better control.
