This product works for about 1 to 1 1/2 years... and then it either dies or fails to dehumidify.
I've had two... I thought I got a bad one the first time, which was repaired under warranty, so I bought another in the meantime. (Got to dehumidify that basement!)
Dang... both are dead now... neither lasted more than 2 years. I'm VERY disappointed. In fact, one just ran & ran without dehumidifing (checked w/ precision humidity meter)... and rang up some large additions to the electric bills (checked w/ the Kill-O-Watt, also available from Amazon... got the idea that I'm an Electrical Engineer?!)
I recently received the Frigidaire 70-pint (from Amazon), and it's going to town! That fan is noisy, but it's pumping air thru fairly quickly so I'd expect the decibels. If you have a basement greater than 900 sq ft, go w/ the Frigidaire and hook it up to a hose into your drain... or better yet, into your sump pump, so it has reason to cycle periodically, which never lets it dry out & fail during that monsoon. The humidity went from >65% to <50% within 2 days. Amazing! The Comfort-Aire never performed like this.
Again, the Comfort-Aire will NOT last. Save yourself spending another $200 within 2 years, and buy something else.
I bought this model at the recommendation of Consumer Reports, which said it was quiet and efficient. It is neither -- from the moment I unboxed it it was louder and ran more than the Frigidaire model I had been evaluating. But I bought it by mail order (not Amazon) and had little recourse. I metered its energy usage and found it was averaging 546 Watts to maintain a constant humidity -- that's about $593.09 per year in electricity! Over the months it has gotten louder and run more often. And yes, I've kept the filter clean.
So I bought another Frigidaire model. It holds more water (70 pints), costs $100 less, is quieter, runs less often, and draws only 341 Watts ($371.33 per year), so it will pay for itself in a single year.
I'm currently waiting to hear back from Comfort Aire customer support. If they do anything to make me less dissatisfied, I'll let you know.
I live on the Gulf of Mexico side of central Florida and humidity here normally runs 70-90%, causing a lot of mold and other issues. I've had a smaller unit running in the garage as needed for years, but wanted a bigger one to control the living area (1100 sf) humidity during the times of the year when the air conditioner doesn't run enough to pull the humidity down to an acceptable level to prevent mold growth. Money was an issue and since I had such good performance with the smaller Whirlpool unit I opted for a larger portable.
After reading many ratings and customer opinions, and doing weeks worth of research on the internet, I picked this unit. It does a good job of pulling moisture out of the air, however I found issues with it's performance I had never encountered with my smaller unit. It pushed a lot more heat out into the home than I expected, causing the central air conditioner system to run a lot more often than I expected. ( it actually raised the house temperature 5-10 degrees after running all day). It's is a lot more noisy than I expected. But the biggest issue is with the sensor and humidity controller side. It's either on or off. The sensor continously causes the unit to cycle back on within minutes of shutting off, run for a few minutes and shut back off. This occurs every couple of minutes. It's not just "testing the humidity level", it's running much longer and more often than it should during these constant on-off cycles, even when the humidity level is much lower than the set point you're using. It virtually runs constantly no matter where you set the dryness level. It has a 2-4 hour setting, which allows you to make it turn on for 2 or 4 hours at a time and then off for 2-4 hours in a steady cycle, repeating constantly unless you change the setting to continous, or set the faulty sensor level which also makes it run almost constantly. The unit uses a considerable amount of electricity when running, or this virtually constant running whether needed or not the sensor causes made a very noticable increase in our electric bill.
The problem was bad enough with the operation of this unit, that we went out and bought another brand ( whirlpool gold 65 pint). Other than being a louder than I would like, the Whirlpool works exactly as it should and does all the things right, that the Confort-Aire never did from the day it was new.
This dehumidifier was installed about one month ago in a very very damp and mildewy basement with lots of odors.
In one week the odors were gone, and the basement is back to it's old self.
The only drawback is that we suspend the unit from joists in the ceiling, so the controls cannot be seen or adjusted unless one stands on a two foot step stool.
However, the unit works very well; we hope it lasts longer than the 18 months we had the prior Sears unit.
I have been using this dehumidifier for approximately one month in my home, an earth sheltered contruction, with two thirds of the living space totally underground. The appliance runs in a central location of the living space.
Our need for dehumidification is a fact of holding moisture that is produced by showers, laundry, cooking, etc. The submerged walls are entirely coated with rubber to prevent moisture entering from the exterior.
The first thing I noticed was that it ran rather loudly and I would like it much better if it were more quiet. Even the hi and lo settings on the fan do not make much difference in the sound.
I have tried it on every variation of every cycle and it seems to shut off and start back up again sometimes when it is indicating a 2 or 4 hour continuous run cycle.
When it is on continous run (no indicator light for 2 or 4 hour run times) it shuts off when it reaches the humidistat setting, but turns back on within three or four minutes as the humidistat is recording rapidly rising humidity. I am assuming that the humidistat sensor is too close to the water container and I cannot use a drain option in my home which would keep the water always running away. I cannot even try it this way, so I don't know if it would work better or not.
With the constant off and on and the level of noise, I often find myself turning it off at night as it is difficult to fall asleep when it is doing that.
It is very efficient at taking out moisture and our local weather has been dry, so I've had to turn it off for a period of time occasionally. I fear with the constant running, we are using more electricity than necessary.
I was really hoping for an appliance that I could turn on and ignore until the full bucket indicator light came on, empty the bucket and depend on it taking a reading and running as needed until the bucket filled again. I do not think that it will ever work for me that way.
Read the negative reviews, bought anyway...so far very pleased. Its features include a digital readout of current humidity level and a adjustable digital level as you desire. It is quiet compared to the three year my previous old other mfg unit with pump. It has already reduced the moisture level in an extremly large basement by 20%. I have mine gravity drained to a basement sump pump. That connection is confusing but was easlily achieved after talking with mfg customer service.
The noise and heat from this product are horrendous. Emptying it is clumsy amd my e-mail to the manufacturer asking about the noise was not answered.
Our unit went through its first fan and motor in about four months, then it went through its second fan and motor in the next four months. The nearest repair shop was an hour and a half away. They were anything but pleased to be doing the warranty work and gave us a long hassle about proving to them that the unit was actually ours. The sales receipt we copied them was not accepted as proof and a call from the manufacturer was finally necessary. The reason they gave for their hesitancy was the trouble they had had getting reimbursed by the manufacturer. The only other repair shop anywhere nearby told us they would not be able to get to it for about six weeks. Once the unit was out of warranty for the fan and motor, I took off the back and noticed that the fan itself is a three cent piece of plastic that spins on a five cent rod coming out of a two dollar motor ( I may be high on the actual cost of these parts ). Once the flimsy plastic in the axle housing of the fan wears a little the fan begins to wobble causing the loud noise that tells you it is done working for you. The motor then burns out trying to spin the out-of-round fan. And so time for the next repair. I called the manufacturer and asked to be sent a fan and motor but they stated they do not ship out parts except to one of their repair centers. So welcome to the eighty dollar "if you bring it through the door" fee. The saying is that you get what you pay for. In this case that is not true. This thing was not cheap to buy, just cheaply made.
The dehumidifier arrived on time and has been pulling a full load ever since. It is quiet and I especially like the digital read out of ambient humidity. I would strongly recommend this product.
I have this exact Comfort-Aire Dehumidifier and it works great in our damp basement. Without it the basement is not tolerable...humidity levels reach 70%. With it, I can maintain as a comfortable 40. I have had it for a year and it is still working fine. No problems!
